Terms of Service

PawnUp · Last updated 9 August 2026

Use PawnUp to get better at chess. Don't try to break it, don't use it to cheat, and understand that a training app is not a guarantee of rating points. That is most of it.

These terms are the agreement between you and PawnUp, made and run by an independent developer in France. Making an account means you accept them. If you do not, don't make one, and if you already have, Settings → Account → Delete account ends it immediately.

Your account

What you may not do

Your chess.com account

Linking one is optional. When you do, PawnUp reads your public profile and your own game archives through chess.com's public API. It never writes anything, never plays a move and never posts as you. chess.com is not affiliated with PawnUp and does not endorse it, and your relationship with them is governed by their terms, not these. Unlink at any time in Settings.

The content in the app

The puzzles come from the Lichess open database, released into the public domain under CC0 1.0. The lessons, the design and the app itself are ours. Engine analysis is produced by Stockfish, which we run on our own servers under the GPLv3, so you are receiving its output rather than a copy of it. The credits are also in the app, under Settings → Credits.

Your games, your puzzle history and your progress are yours. We store and process them to run the app, as described in the Privacy Policy, and we do not claim ownership of them.

What we promise, and what we don't

PawnUp is provided as it is. We work to keep it running and accurate, but we do not promise it will be available without interruption, that analysis will be correct, or that using it will raise your rating. Chess improvement is a thing you do; the app is a tool for doing it.

Game analysis in particular depends on a service we host, and it can be unavailable. The rest of the app is built to keep working when it is.

Liability

To the extent the law allows, PawnUp is not liable for indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of it. Nothing here limits liability for death, personal injury, fraud, or anything else a consumer cannot waive, and if you are a consumer in the EU, your statutory rights are untouched by any of this.

Ending it

You can leave at any time by deleting your account. We can suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, and will say why unless saying so would help somebody keep doing it.

Changes

These terms can change: a new feature, a new rule, a new law. Material changes are announced in the app before they take effect, and carrying on using PawnUp after that is how you accept them.

Law

French law governs these terms. If you are a consumer, you keep the right to bring a claim in the courts of the country you live in.
